Wondering how to pay for a honeymoon when you are already paying for a wedding? Well, GOOD NEWS! You don’t have to!

Here is exactly how you can score a free honeymoon by paying for it with credit card points… AND how you can get those credit card points too!

how to pay for a honeymoon

I would probably be thinking the same thing… going on a honeymoon for free sounds pretty unrealistic. But if you play the system right with these steps I am about to share, you too can land that free vacay by knowing exactly how to pay for a honeymoon with your credit card points!

While I am already married, I really do use these EXACT tips I am about to share to go on free (or highly discounted) trips often, so I know firsthand that this really does work!

This post is all about how to pay for a honeymoon with credit card points (and how to get points!)

1. Own The Right Travel Credit Card

If you don’t want to have to pay for your honeymoon while also paying for your wedding, you need to start by getting a travel card. The best travel card to pay for a honeymoon with will depend on where you want to travel. I use Chase Sapphire and Amex Platinum, but these are just two of many travel cards out there!

Before getting that travel card that will help you honeymoon for free, check what airlines and hotels that travel card can transfer points to. You’ll want to make sure that they are partnered with an airline and/or a hotel that will take you to your desired honeymoon destination!

I personally love to revert to the Transfer Partner Cheat Sheet from The Daily Drop to see what cards are partnered with what airlines/ hotels. I literally have it bookmarked so I can easily pull it up! It’ll be a big resource for you when you start honeymoon planning.

2. How To Get Points

Paying with points is only the best way to honeymoon if you are naturally accumulating points and not unnecessarily spending money to get those points.

The absolute best way to rack in a ton of points in time for your honeymoon is by paying for your wedding (or as much of it as you can) with your travel card.

When you sign up for a travel card, they will usually have a welcome offer that can be earned as long as you spend X amount of money over X amount of time.

Because you will be charging your wedding expenses to this travel card, you will have no problem earning that welcome offer! Here is Chase Sapphire’s current welcome offer if you are curious about what these offers look like.

3. Finding Transfer Point Deals

The third step in learning how to pay for a honeymoon with points is to keep an eye out for travel deals.

Now that you have a couple of places in mind that you would like to go to and you have a card accumulating points that can go toward those destinations, keep a close eye out for travel deals and point transfer bonuses!

These come and go fairly often, so it is best to check OFTEN. Again, I would bookmark that travel cheat sheet I linked earlier, as it includes all the current transfer bonuses going on!

What are transfer points?

Transfer points are points that are moved from specific credit cards to airline or hotel loyalty programs. When you spend money on a travel credit card, you earn points that can either be redeemed directly in your credit card’s travel portal, OR you can “transfer” your points to an affiliated airline or hotel that accepts points from that credit card company.

Why transfer points?

The incentive to transfer points from a credit card to a loyalty program is when the point has a higher spending power with the loyalty program than it would with the credit card.

For example, 50,000 points with Chase Sapphire Preferred may be worth $500 to go towards a plane ticket, but when transferred to British Airlines, those same 50,000 points are now worth two round-trip tickets to England. (This is just a made-up example and not representative of an actual deal going on.)

Alternatives…

If this method isn’t ideal for you, you could also have a mini-moon right after your wedding and delay your “honeymoon” for your first wedding anniversary! This will give you more time to accumulate points/ save up money so you can have the honeymoon of your dreams!

Since my husband and I got married during COVID, that is what we ended up having to do and it was so great. To us, it was like we were extending the wedding celebration!
